Anemonefish (aka “Clownfish”) live in a hierarchical social system.  This is based on size and consists of the two largest adults at the top of the social ladder, of which the female is the largest and most socially dominate followed by the largest make which is her partner for life.  All other fishes within the same household are male and smaller in size.  In most cases there is only one pair of adults to each anemone who permits juveniles and smaller anemonefish to co-exist with them.

One of the most intriguing things about anemonefish is its ability to change sex.  They are hermaphrodites.  All are born male but they have the ability to transform into females when the appropriate time arrives.
