Known the world-over as a tropical paradise with its breathtaking landscapes, rich culture and friendly locals, Bali also offers a thriving and vibrant underwater world with some amazing dive sites. The waters around Bali are abundant with extensive coral reefs and magnificent marine life from small creatures to the larger animals like sharks, turtles, manta rays and mola mola. Spectacular dives include drop off walls, wreck diving and drift diving. One of the diving highlights in Bali is definitely the wreck of the American cargo ship “Liberty”, which was torpedoed by the Japanese during World War II and sank in the bay of Tulamben. This artificial reef is completely encrusted with anemone, gorgonian sea fans, coral sponges and other marine life. It's also home to Bumphead Parrotfish, a huge school of Trevallies and a wide variety colourful fish that swim in and around the the wreck. The other main attraction that makes Bali a favourite destination with divers around the world is the Mola Mola (Oceanic Sunfish). Between August and October, you can encounter this odd-looking but magnificent fish. Found mostly at Nusa Penida, an adult Mola Mola can grow to more than 3m and weigh over 1,000 kg.
