| Pulau Perhentian |
|
Malaysia's state of Terengganu is blessed with 3 marine parks and one of it is the Perhentian Archipelago. These marine parks are protected under the Marine Parks regulations administered by the Department of Fisheries, thereby preserving the marine environment around the area. The Perhentian Islands, which means “Stopover Islands”, is Terengganu's northernmost park. Only 20km by ferry from Kuala Besut, this marine park consists of Pulau Perhentian Besar (Big Stopover Island) and Pulau Perhentian Kecil (Little Stopover Island) with several smaller islets to the northwest. Perhentian Islands are renowned as one of Malaysia's marine paradise.
Virgin jungle, swaying palm trees, powdery white sandy beaches and warm sapphire blue waters surround the islands. Hence, the islands offer relaxation in an idyllic and serene atmosphere. The beaches are suitable for swimmers and snorkellers because they lead to shallow water over sand with lots of rays, cuttlefish and parrotfish.
Because of their relative isolation, the marine life and colorful coral garden in the surrounding waters is largely intact. Scuba divers prize Perhentian's small constellation of rocky islets for their giant soft corals, large schools of pelagic fish, and the nocturnal seashells that are sometimes spotted in the shallow channel between the two main islands.
